Chapter
Nineteen
Blossom was shell shocked. Rightly soâshe snuck out that night hoping to save not only her family but ours, and had ended up being exiled from her home, labeled a traitor, and watched her own sister come damn close to being killed.
Needless to say it was a long walk back to the farm.
We hiked in a semi-circle around Blossom and Sophia, who clutched each other within the walls of our protection. The wolf-girl quietly cried as she walked. Alexis, for once, seemed to have no desire to say I told you so.
After a while, I noticed Charlotte eyeing me. I gave her my attention, and we had one of our silent conversations while we walked.
As far as I could tell, she was saying something along the lines of: Donât you think you should apologize to Blossom for almost murdering her sister in front of her?
My reply: I have mixed feelings about that.
It didnât take a mind reader to interpret Charlotteâs reply. Sighing at my defeat, I turned to Blossom at the center of our little pack.
âBlossom,â I started, breaking the long silence weâd endured. âI just wanted to say, Iâm real sorry tonight didnât go as you planned. And Iâm ashamed for how far I took things with Lara. But weâll find a way to meet with Maven, I promise you. We just have toâ¦get around your sister somehow.â
âWe have to kill her,â Blossom replied plainly.
We all stopped walking, Sophia staring at her friend like sheâd just yodeled the national anthem.
âWhat?â Sophia gasped.
Blossom swallowed, squaring herself.
âIâve been thinking about it this whole time,â she said, her voice wavering but strong. âMy mother might be capable of change, but I know that Lara isnât. My sister will die before she allows us anywhere near Mavenâbefore she allows peace between us. Sheâs so terrified of anything changing, I think sheâd do just about anything to stop us. Tonight proved that. I never, ever wanted to reach this pointâ¦but I know now that weâll never have peace while Lara is alive.â
A single tear escaped the corner of her eye, and she wiped it away quickly.
âBlossâ¦â Sophia said, squeezing her friendâs arm.
âItâs okay,â Blossom assured. âI think, in the back of my mindâ¦Iâve been preparing for this for a very long time.â
Charlotte reached forward, pushing a lock of dirty blond hair that had escaped Blossomâs braid out of her face. The wolf-girl jolted a littleâprobably unfamiliar with being touched so gently. But, with Charlotte, it was hard not to feel that instant warmth.
âYouâre very brave,â Charlotte said softly.
Blossom looked down at her bare feet, caked with dirt from the forest floor.
âIâm not sure I would call it that,â she mumbled.
âI would,â Alexis said.
âAnd thatâs coming from the vicious warrior who saved my life earlier,â Sophia joked, smiling at Alexis.
The fox-girl blushed a little, shrugging.
âNo one fucks with my new friends,â Alexis declared.
At that, the girls seemed to find the strength to keep going, as we continued our hike with a new warmth injected into our little group.
